Does Religion Cause War

Religion has played a major part in the history of humanity and it continues to do so today. No matter where you are in the world, the idea that someone does not possess a religion seems almost impossible to most people. Indeed, almost every major country in the world has a national religion of choice.

What is religion

To answer the question of whether or not religion causes war, we must consider the features of religion that sets it apart from other groups. A religion can be defined as a set of beliefs that is held and practiced by a group of persons, usually supported by religious texts.

Simple enough, however the problem arises when each religion claims that their beliefs and subsequent God is the only truth in the world and all other beliefs must be discarded in favor of theirs. Even this could be tolerated, people are allowed to have their own opinions and views.

The problem with religion

The problems begin when one religion, either through a leader or text, declares that it is their mission to purify the population of non believers. Because every religious person believes that their doctrine is the right one, it is impossible to rationalize with these people.

Inability to reason is one thing, many religions have strict beliefs and rules that must be followed at all costs because, they claim, it is the will of God. When these beliefs or rules are ignored or broken by people who do not share their religion, the followers claim insult and often seek to take action against the violators.

Naturally, a person who feels that they have done nothing wrong will not allow another person to punish them based on their own rules. This leads to conflict, which often leads to violence and in many cases, civil wars and wars of oppression, where one group is denied access to certain areas of a country.

In countries where the government state and the religion of the land are one body, the chances of these conflicts escalating into all our warfare are higher, since the state has full command of the resources and army of any given nation. In many cases, nations have been invaded by religious folks of different countries because they believe that they are justified in their actions to eradicate non believers from the earth.

Life is too short to continue squabbling over who believes what, especially since there is no way for us to find out which is right while we still live on earth.
